'South Park' is not your ordinary neighborhood

By Bob K.

Bovine-fluent aliens, a crazy genetic engineer who lives at the top of a mountain and creates mutant turkeys, and giants who make wicker baskets. What do all of these have in common? They are the ideas that form the basis for the twisted new animated comedy series, South Park. South Park is a show about four not-so-normal kids who find themselves in all sorts of silly, sick situations.

Trey Parker supplies the voices of Cartman, Stan and Mr. Garrison, Kyle and Kenny are done by Matt Stone, and Issac Hayes gives the school's chef his voice. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are also the co-producers of this hit series. South Park is a very amusing and entertaining show, which is nearing the end of its first season. Plans are already underway for next season. South Park airs on Comedy Central at 9 P.M. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Amar offers a synopsis of 'The Simpsons'

By Amar P.

The Simpsons is a popular T.V. show about five strange cartoon characters. They are Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart and Maggie. The Simpsons live in Springfield, Illinois, and Bart and Lisa attend Springfield Elementary, which is a school where kids can do almost anything they want. Lisa is the smart child and Bart, well, he is one of those kids who will do anything. Homer works at the local nuclear power plant for his boss, Mr. Burns, who is an old, weak man, who would do anything for money. Marge is a housewife who keeps her family together. The Simpsons is a great show because it makes people laugh while it tells the lives of some very wierd people.

Mario 64

By Tony S.

Mairo 64 was the first release for Nintendo 64, along with Pilot Wings. It is one of the best games on the market, providing hours of fun, excitement, and entertainment. The object of the game is to get all of the 120 stolen stars back from Bowser. You go through many exciting worlds; there are great puzzles in this game that you have to solve to get a star.

In order to beat the game, there are secrets you have to find to get the 120 stars. In some levels, you need to practice a few times in order to get it right because this game can be tricky. The ending for this game is horrible, but overall, it is a solid and enjoyable adventure game.

Final Fantasy III

By Jeff Reardon

If you've played (or even beaten) Final Fantasy VII for Playstation then you know that it is a very good game. Final Fantasy III, the prequel to FF VIII, is almost as good as its sequel. So dust of your SNES? and get ready for a great game playing time. Note: The reason Final Fantasy III is the sequel to Final Fantasy VIII is that not all of the Final Fantasy games were released in the U.S. Final Fantasy VI in Japan was only the third Final Fantasy released here.

The story of FFIII begins in the mountain town of Narshe. An ancient magical creature, or esper, has been discovered here and the Empire is out to find it. They, however, want to use it for evil purposes, so you have to stop them. And what starts out as a small rebellion turns into struggle to save the world!

Overall, this game is superb. It has excellent play mechanics. The battle system is easy to use and yet complex at the same time, which makes for good play. The graphics are pretty good, although Squaresoft could have done a slightly better job. They are definitely not even close to the visual quality of VIII's, but still very enjoyable. The music and sound effects give the game a great sense of feeling and mood. The sound of sword clashes and punches also add excitement to the battles. And in the length department, well, shall I say you won't have much free time. It takes close to 50 or 60 hours to beat (about the same as FF VII). So if you're looking for good RPG? fun, or are new to the genre, then this is one game you should not miss.

Rating: 97/100

Titanic is a splash at the box office

By Amber S.

Titanic, rated PG-13, was truly an exceptional movie. Not only were the special effects awesome (they should have been, considering the movie's $200 million price tag), but the love story of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) was equally extraordinary. This movie has something for everyone. There is the adventure/disaster aspect of it for the people who are not fond of the "ucky love stuff." Titanic’s love story should, however, be able to move anyone to tears--trust me, I know. And the history buffs should be pleased that the director, James Cameron, researched the subject for several years and even went down to see the real R.M.S. Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic. Only a few things were not true to life, most notably the love affair between Rose and Jack. Practically everything else was based on facts, including the story of the gallant string quartet that played until the ship went down. DiCaprio and Winslet really brought their characters alive. In a scene stealing performance, Kathy Bates played the "Unsinkable" Molly Brown, and Billy Zane (Phantom) played Rose's evil fiancé Cal Hockley.

The movie opened with a search for the famed diamond, La Coeur de la Mer, or "Heart of the Ocean." Bill Paxton (Twister) portrayed the chief treasure hunter, Brock. His character, however, was underdeveloped and really nothing more than a cipher. Instead of finding the diamond, the treasure hunters found a sketch of a rather, shall I say, not appropriately attired, Rose, which Jack drew the night the Titanic sank. Rose, now one hundred, saw the drawing on TV and called Brock to tell him about the diamond that she wore in the picture. Brock then sent for Rose to meet him on his ship to discuss the Heart of the Ocean. Rose told the treasure hunters her story--how she was forced into an engagement with Cal, and how Jack saved her life when she considered suicide to escape her forthcoming marriage to a man whom she despised. Jack saved her so many times and in so many ways that he became an expert at it. He saved Rose's body and soul from being destroyed by the upper class society of which she was a part. And Rose changed Jack's whole outlook on life. It's interesting how one fateful night can change your entire life. That was how it was on the Titanic on April 12, 1912.

Of the 2,200 people on the Titanic, only seven hundred or so made it to lifeboats. Of the twenty lifeboats that were launched, only one went back for the people in the water and only six people were rescued from the near freezing waters off the coast of Newfoundland. It was amazing (and criminal) that the ship had only enough lifeboats for half the passengers, and that the captain could perhaps have avoided hitting the deadly iceberg if the Titanic had been going more slowly. It really makes you wonder about the decisions people make, the consequences of their actions and the effect of those consequences on the lives of so many people.

Amber liked the Titanic Soundtrack too...

By Amber S.

Titanic, the movie, was exceptional and so was its soundtrack. The enchanting Irish melodies repeated throughout the CD make it an extraordinary musical achievement. There are only a few things that I do not like about the music. I would have to say that this is the very rare CD able to hold my attention for the entire seventy minutes. The different aspects and qualities of the soundtrack are well organized and almost always mesh well with one another. I am sure that this enterprise will earn many awards, and it rightfully deserves them.

Song One: Never an Absolution

This song has haunting but beautiful Irish melodies, including a somber vocal section with vocal stylings provided by Sissel. I like this song for its sad lullaby like sound. It makes me visualize someone standing by the sea looking out onto the water, wondering what's out there.

Song Two: Distant Memories

I don't like this song. It's pretty, but I just don't like it.

Song Three: Southhamptony

In the beginning of this song, you think it's going to be sad, but the crescendo leading up to vocalists and wind chimes adds a playful, dolphinesque quality. The clarinet solo in the middle adds alot to the song. With this piece, James Horner wrote a beautiful arrangement of strings. The whole number is very well produced.

Song Four: Rose

Again, this song has an Irish feel to it with a recorder introduction. "Rose" is much like "Never an Absolution," except that the vocalist uses the rhythms of the song "My Heart Will Go On" (song fourteen). The dynamics are just right and it all meshes well. C'est magnifique!

Song Five: Leaving Port

This is an icky song. I don't like the percussion at all. The synthesized orchestration was horrid. It sounds like you're swimming and you can't reach the surface because you're in the wake of a boat. What were they thinking?

Song Six: "Take Her to Sea, Mr. Murdoch"

I don't like this song either. It sounds like the cellos and the chimes are off. It builds itself up and then goes nowhere.

Song Seven: "Hard to Starboard"

In the beginning of this song, there is a beautiful organ and vocal introduction leading to an oboe solo. The song goes along prettily, then all of a sudden, a drum roll leads into a mean and angry section. The percussion section, along with a lot of string players, speed up the tempo and a dog fight occurs. This song was perfect for when the boat hit the iceberg. It sounds like the Big Bad Wolf, very desperate and strenuous. I would not like to be a member of the orchestra during this song, however.

Song Eight: Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave

This song depicts the time when Rose and Jack need to figure out how to survive. The enchanting introduction leads to a string bass part that I hate, but then leads into another enchanting section with vocals and various wind instruments. You can visualize the trouble in Rose's heart as she watches Jack as she is lowered in the lifeboat. Then there is a desperate section. Rose leaps back aboard the fated Titanic to either live or die with Jack. I like it. It is much like a person trying to run but not getting anywhere.

Song Nine: The Sinking

The brass and vocals just don't fit in this number. The snare drum part is not well written. It sounds as though the writer was very scared and wrote this song in a fit of rage. The legato section is too fast and the chords hurt my ears. It sounded a lot like Batman music and I have never been a fan of Batman.

Song Ten: Death of the Titanic

This is much like "The Sinking"--Batman music, 'nuff said. But that concise criticism just doesn't do this awful song justice. The melody that I usually like was butchered and it was eight minutes and twenty-six seconds of rambling.

Song Eleven: A Promise Kept

The promise that the title is referring to is so tearful that thinking about what it means could make you cry. It starts with a very dark sound, much like the wolf in Peter and the Wolf. The low brass has the melody as the tension rises. Then comes a clarinet solo (good for them) that sounds like a dirge. The song moves at a slow, sad pace with a crying like quality in the vocals. Accompanying the vocals is a lute-sounding instrument that adds to the traumatic affect. Then the theme of the entire CD comes back into play as the clarinet joins in again. There seems to be a resolution as the tempo and the notes are raised and the theme comes back in full force.

Song Twelve: A Life So Changed

This is a great song. The vocalist has a great range from very high to very low. And as the instruments are added it makes you want to cry. Then the composer ruins that aspect. I would have ended it after the vocalist finished her little deal. But no. Not my buddy James Horner. He had to crush the beauty of the song like a little bug. SQUASH!

Song Thirteen: Ocean of Memories

This song has a mystical feel in the beginning; it's kind of creepy. The song sounds like one big slur. I don't think the title is very well fitted for the song, but nonetheless it is still a good song. It almost sounds like a waltz at parts. As Mr. Bean would say, "Magic!"

Song Fourteen: My Heart Will Go On

Sweet Mother, get the Kleenexes. Sigh, sob, tear drop. Celine Dion makes this song work so well. Her voice goes wonderfully with the song's sad feel. I love this song from the bottom of my heart. The instrumental parts of the song coincide so well with the enchanting vocal melody sung by Celine Dion. The only thing I don't like is the line, "My heart will go on." It's as though you're forgetting the love of your life. Oh well, sappy or no, this song is still exceptional. It won Best Song at the Golden Globes.

Song Fifteen: Hymn to the Sea

Keep that Kleenex box near in this song. The Irish melody people are back in full force when Jack dies in the movie. After listening to "My Heart Will Go On," your are already depressed and this song doesn't help the cause any. I love it even though it makes me want to curl up into a little ball in the corner and cry my eyes out. The Scottish bag pipe is beautiful and adds to the majesty of the song. It is so wonderfully put together, "Hymn of the Sea" sums up the entire CD. It has the sad, minor and major key melodies with the occasional happy melody all strewn into one.

Titanic won four Golden Globes

By Liz F.

The 55th Annual Golden Globe results are in, and the block-buster, Titanic, stole the show by winning four awards, including best motion picture. James Cameron won best director for Titanic, and James Horner took the award for Titanic's musical score. Finally, Titanic also won best original song for "My Heart Will Go On. " Accomplished British actress, Judi Dench, won best actress for Mrs. Brown, a movie about England's Queen Victoria. Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson won best actress and actor in a comedy for their performances in As Good As It Gets.

The Fox network's X-Files took the award for best T.V. drama and Ally McBeal beat the stiff competition of Frasier, Friends and Seinfeld for the best TV comedy award.

The Golden Globe award show was not without its strange moments. Christine Lahti, who won best actress for her role in Chicago Hope, was in the bathroom when her name was announced. She said afterwards, "I was just flushing the toilet when someone said, 'you won' and I thought, 'what a terrible joke'." Ving Rhames, who won best actor in a miniseries for his performance in Don King, invited Jack Lemmon to join him on stage, and insisted that Lemmon take his award. Rhames said that "Lemmon deserved the award more."

Although there is sure to be disagreement about which picture or person really deserved to win, it is a fact that in the last fifteen years, eleven best motion picture winners at the Golden Globe awards have gone on to win Oscars.
