Angels, Outer Space and Parrots–What do these things have in common?

By John S.

City of Angels (PG-13)

In City of Angels, a story of romance and desire starring Academy Award-winner NICHOLAS CAGE and two-time Golden Globe-nominee MEG RYAN, two souls, one mortal and one angel, must struggle with their willingness - and finally, their need -- to sacrifice everything for the sake of love. Nicholas Cage plays Seth, a restless angel on duty in Los Angeles, who encounters Dr. Maggie Rice (Meg Ryan), a heart surgeon whose sense of control is deeply shaken by losing a patient on her table for no apparent reason. Although Seth is there to aid the dying man, he is immediately drawn to Maggie and wants to help her overcome her problem. In the process, he falls in love with her and longs for the sensory world he has observed but never experienced. Finally, despite its risks, Seth takes the unusual step of becoming visible to Maggie, changing from an abstract spirit to a mysterious stranger. Maggie is intrigued and captivated by Seth, but as their passion for each other deepens, she questions the sanity of loving this perfect man with no past, a man who challenges her most closely held beliefs about the place of faith in her life. Maggie becomes confused, frightened, angry and bewildered by her vulnerability to Seth - but beyond all of those emotions, she falls more deeply in love with him than she ever believed possible.

Lost in Space (PG-13)

The 60's TV series has been somewhat altered into a 90's sci-fi "blockbuster". The Robinsons, Don West, Dr. Smith, and yes, Robot. The crew of the Jupiter2 is overwhelmed in a bombardment of special effects and mayhem. The evil doings of Dr, Smith gets them all into trouble. The only way to save them selves was by getting themselves lost in space. Once again they get into trouble and it's up Professor Robinson to save the day.

Paulie (PG)

The story of Paulie, the lovable but straightforward parrot, begins when he is a mere baby. Raised by a little girl named Marie (Hallie Kate Eisenberg), Paulie succeeds in helping his young owner overcome a painful stutter. But in the process, Paulie himself develops an uncontrollable gift of chatter. In a cruel twist, Marie's parents decide that their daughter is getting too attached to the bird and send him away. Undeterred and determined to return to his owner, the loyal Paulie sets out on a quest to find Marie. On his adventure, Paulie has some interesting encounters with people who discover his vocal gift and try to abuse it for their own means. He also falls in love; a street vendor named Ignacio (Cheech Marin) owns a beautiful singing parrot that catches Paulie's eye. I haven't seen this movie yet, but I have a feeling that its for the birds.

Nightmare Creatures

By Bob K.

Nightmare Creatures is set in London, England in 1834. Adam Crowly, once a respected scientist, is now the leader of the Brotherhood of the Hecate. He has discovered the keys to people's deepest fears, and using this dangerous knowledge, he has created an evil race of "Supermen" to take over the world for him. Nightmare Creatures is a great fighting game. It includes strategy as well as the normal action, and it gives the player a number of choices in fighting the evil creatures.

A fond Adieu

By Christa M.

It’s almost over, almost through,

I s’pose I should feel somewhat blue.

Guess what? That feeling has been delayed,

I’m thrilled to be finishing sixth grade!

I must admit I’m a little sad,

and I’ll miss some teachers that I had.

But overall, I feel sublime

and there is a reason for this rhyme.

I’d like to bid a fond adieu,

To all you eighth graders, yes, that means you.

Just think, you’ll be leaving Peacock’s friendly halls,

For the sights of Lake Park’s dungeon-like walls.

I know it seems frightening,

It does to me, too.

Hey, look at it this way,

it’s something new.

Don’t worry, you’ll make it,

You made it through here.

And as adults always say,

You have nothing to fear....

So I wish you the best,

good luck, toodle loo,

And maybe I’ll see you in 2002!

City
of Angels delivers an important earthly message

By Brittany B.

The City of Angels was shot in Los Angeles, (the city of angels) it all makes sense. Nicholas Cage portrays "Seth" the angel. Meg Ryan is "Maggie" an over worked surgeon. Setting: Los Angeles, present day. Maggie and Seth meet as Maggie is trying desperately to save a patient from dying on her table. "Seth" is there to take the patient to heaven. Somehow, they fall in love.

Because of the amazing screenplay written by Dana Stevens, the characters have so much meaning and life that they move you from humor to tears. Despite the eerie cast of angels dressed in all black, the special effects were boring. But deep down, beneath the angels walking along skyscrapers, and in unexpected places, a story of love survives. City of Angels can definitely be labeled, "a chick-flick," I'm sorry to say.

The angels are everywhere, and one of the many unexpected places is a huge library. Yes, Angels read too. What do you think they do with all their "free" time? The angels are pretty surprising. They have supernatural powers. They can read people's minds, calm people down without the people seeing them, and they learn quite a lot from the human race.

The end of the movie is romantic, and heartwarming, in an unusual way. It's sort of telling the audience to enjoy what time we have on earth, and you can find love in unexpected places, and in unexpected people. City of Angels was rated PG-13, and was very powerful. I would give this moving cast, and beautifully written story two thumbs up. After seeing City of Angels, it is kind of hard not to believe in angels, which I think was the movie's point.

Cinderella

Anonymous

The moon shining brightly.

The words that you say.

in my arms held tightly,

How we will forever stay.

A reply with a kiss

To a tease in your eye.

Cupid's arrow didn't miss

And he rests with a sigh.

We are walking by the river,

Moonlight dancing on the stream,

Holding hands forever,

Or that is how it may seem.

A clock overpowers

In the dark sky where seen.

The huge stone tower

Strikes out the time like a beam.

Suddenly you go

But a slipper you leave

So that I may know

Of how our lives soon will weave.

Without you by me

I cannot feel.

I wish you to see

How without you I feel.

A search is sent out.

I can't eat a meal.

Until you are found

My heart will not heal.

Who is this I find

Smelling a rose?

I listen to her voice,

The sweet sound of a doe's.

But I do not know

You are the true love of mine

Till you try on the shoe,

And I see it fits fine.

You and I are two now.

We will never be apart.

Was it magic I found you,

Or a thanks of the heart?

Goodbye Everyone!

By Bobby B.

Through the past years at Peacock Jr. High

I’ve had many good times

Believe it or not that is no lie

Although I’ve been quite obnoxious in the past

Especially in Mr. Martin’s class

I’ve changed a little, deep within the core

Living, learning in Peacock's door

In those doors I’ve grown very smart,

But now my core will break

For you see, what I mean is my heart.

I have gotten detentions, bats, and taps galore

Yet it’s funny, I kept getting more

Now, I’m glad I had these

In which I know I did earn

And I thank the teachers for having some concern

This poem will not be officially done

With out saying goodbye everyone.

GOODBYE EVERYONE!

Mirror

By Amber S.

A piece of glass faces space,

A whole new world in my face.

As the sunlight slips through my fingers,

In my mind it will linger.?

I cross through the shadows,

With not a speck of light to help me by,

As a tree shudders with a sigh

A sharp wind takes my hair,

In the shadows I do stare.

I lift my face to the sky,

A cloud breaks as I cry.

Trembling as I continue on,

Traveling into the dawn.

Reaching for my journey's end,

The sun begins to rise again.

I step away from the glass,

Hoping that the sun will last.

Glancing back at the glass,

All I see is the glass.

Once You Look, You Will See

Anonymous

On the shore

The wave will break.

I wish for more,

But will not take.

The water washes over the ground.

A wave to hit is surely bound.

I take a step in your heart,

Like shooting an arrow in the dark.

You hope and pray to hit the target,

But you miss and do not mark it.

Walking along the horizon.

Standing by the sea.

Where ever and when ever,

You will always be with me.

In a step towards danger,

On a special day,

In a mood of anger,

By a tropic bay.

Then one day

When far away

You will stop and see,

That the angel on your shoulder

Is the friend you found in me.

K.C. and Friends

By Kurt M.

As I look forward to another year,

I can see the past in my tear.

Why it is there, I do not know,

But probably because I will miss it so.

So many friends, so many times,

All as priceless as a handful of dimes.

So many times, up and down,

I won’t leave the friends I have found.

Basketball, Cinderella and Band,

All of which played to my hand.

From Nirvana buddies to a very special radio,

I will always keep music in my heart; I don’t want to go.

And in the end, none will matter,

But I can see past the ladder.

I will remember this year

Simply because it is a year to remember.

Poem

By Lindsay C.

Glowing like a candlelight,

Dreams await you day and night.

Thinking of the one you love,

Giving him a turtle dove.

You sing songs for him to hear,

Hoping he'll draw ever near.

Waking up you look around,

He is nowhere to be found.

Swimming through the endless sea,

Wishing he'd return to me.

Broken hearts you come to hate,

Seeing that this is your fate.

Softly whispered in your ear,

Things you thought you'd never hear.

Things like love and happiness,

Never one bit close to bliss.

You love him and he loves you,

That's one thing you always knew.
