Eighth grade boys win championship The eighth grade boy's basketball team just finished a very impressive and successful season. Their record in the conference was 5 and 1, and 13 and 3 overall. They received a first place trophy for winning the Lake Park Tournament, and they also won a second place consolation championship trophy against Driscoll. According to their coach, Mr. Anderson, the best game the team played was against Indian Trail at Driscoll's Tournament. Having lost to Indian Trail by 4 points last year, the Chargers came back this season and beat them by eight points. Mr. Anderson thought that the team's most difficult game was with Westfield because of Westfield's talent and obvious height advantage. Sean N. and Josh P. were described by Mr. Anderson as the most hard-working players on the team, and Ryan C. as the most talented. The players who improved the most since the beginning of the season, Mr. Anderson said, were Scott J. and Rory B. Mr. Anderson commented this was a competitive season and that the success of the team was due to hard work, playing smart and compassion for the game. "All the boys worked really hard," he said. "They demonstrated that they were committed to achieving their personal goals." Scoring averages (points per game) for the leading players: Ryan C. -15 Josh P. - 8 Sean N. - 6 Tony B. - 6

Brand and the Bulls show signs of life The season started off badly for the Bulls, who quickly lost their first five players to injuries, which left them as the worst team in the league. They fought hard for two months, but the lack of talent killed them. I'm happy to report though, that the Bulls are back now. Star forward Toni Kukoc is back from injury, and has lead the team to an occasional victory, with wins over such top ranked teams as the Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, and Miami Heat. The star player for the Bulls this year is the rookie out of Duke, Elton Brand. He's among the league leaders in points with 18 per game, and rebounds with 10 per game. He should definitely be the Rookie of the Year. Toni Kukoc is playing great and is the main reason why the Bulls have been able to win a few games lately. Free agent pick-ups Matt Maloney and Chris Carr are giving the Bulls solid minutes. Rookie Ron Artest is a great player who does everything on defense and offense, like former Bull, Scottie Pippen. All the Bulls need now is another Michael Jordan. The Bulls have a solid team and should finish the season strong. If they pick up one very talented free agent in the off- season, they should be a playoff contender next year. The Bulls are pretty good and entertaining to watch. Email The Charger about this story.
