Cross country team cruises into season
By Sarah R.

Where were the members of the Peacock's cross country team during the summer? On foot, running through the Nature Center, on bikes and roller blades cruising the bike path at Bussie Woods, or at the Itasca Pool for rest and relaxation after a good workout.
This year, Ms. Krisik, the cross country coach, held a cross country camp during the month of August. This camp was designed to show incoming sixth graders what Cross Country was like.
For the seventh and eighth graders, the camp provided a chance to start training for the fall season. There are eighteen members of the team who participated in the camp.Seventh grader, Mark K. and sixth grader, Kyle P. said they attended the camp because they liked running and getting ready for the season early.
The team met on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Nature Center. The team worked out from 8:15 to 9:30 A.M. This meant a few students, such as seventh grader, Robert P. had to get up earlier than planned. Robert did admit that he thought it was worth the effort.
On Monday they worked on distance running, Wednesday was spent on sprints and Friday's they ran hills.
As a change of pace, the participants went biking or roller blading in Bussie Woods. Sixth grader, Rose D. thought this was one of the highlights of practice.
Seventh grader, Amy F. who was on roller blades, said it was hard to keep up with the bikers, but she still enjoyed the outing.
Ms. Krisik commented that she thought this was an excellent group of dedicated runners, which made coaching something she loved to do. She did add, however, that the team still needed to work on pacing and increasing their mileage.
On the whole, Mrs. Kirsik thought that the team was off to a great start. Team members that looked promising for a great season included seventh graders Aubrie H., Christine C., Frank S. and Mark K.
The Cross Country team will have their first meet at home on September 14. The meets are held at the Abor area of Springbrook Nature Center.
