A Family Apart
A mother makes the hardest choice
By Alicia N.Christmas
By Nancy M.

Sleigh bells are ringing,

Carolers are singing,

People are bringing,

Presents that are dinging,

From those who care,

And that is what Christmas is all about!!!!

A Family Apart, by Joan Lowery Nixon, is about a family of six children and their widowed mother, Mrs. Kelly.

The oldest child is Frances Mary. She is like a second mother to the other children when their mother is at work.

There are three boys. Mike is the oldest boy, followed by Danny, and Petey is the youngest.

The other sisters are Megan and Peg. The family is very poor and hardly has enough food or money to live.

One day, Mike gets caught stealing and has to go to court. Mrs. Kelly makes the biggest decision of her life. She sends all her children on an Orphan Train to a much better life she can't give them.

Find out what happens to the six children and the hardships they go though when you read A Family Apart.

Baby trouble
Sixth graders learn responsibility
By Kaitlyn L.

"Sorry, I can't, I've got the baby this weekend." Hasn't that been the number one quote for sixth graders this year?

It seems as though the infant simulators, which students must care for as part of the family and consumer science curriculum, have gotten in the way of everything!

Actually, the babies do make for a funny experience, if you look at it the right way. Some of the stories that the sixth graders have told about minding the babies have been bizarre and amusing.

One sixth grader said that he was so nervous about the baby beginning to cry, that anything that sounded like a baby, he would try to put the key in it. A telephone sounds like a baby, right? Well imagine him trying to put a key in a telephone.

Another tale about sitting the babies was a little more nerve wracking.

One sixth grader woke up really early one morning to a sharp cry. She did not remember what to do when the baby cried.

In a panic, she went to her sister's room and yelled, "you need two people to stop this baby's crying!" Of course, her sister woke up, looked around, and screamed at her "USE THE KEY!"

She still had no idea that she even had the care key on her wrist.

Then she yelled again, but this time to her mom. Her mom said to her "You need to use the care key." The girl was still lost. She yelled "what key?"

Her mom then answered, "the key on your wrist."

Finally she put the key in the crying baby and it stopped.

It did take her a long time to put the key in the baby. She probably lost points for that, but she still gave us this good story.

Overall, the babies are giving all of the sixth graders the experience of a lifetime. And no, there is no prize for the funniest baby moment.

Let's all give a hand for our darling babies, April, Ashley, Kara, Sarah, Carlos, Cody, Kyle, and Quintin for sharing their happiness and sorrow with us.

The Third Eye
A teenager has a special gift
By Sammie D.

The Third Eye, by Lois Duncan, is a suspenseful mystery about a teenage girl, Karen Connors, who has psychic powers. These powers allow her to find missing children and see them at the time of their disappearance.

The best part of the story is when Karen is in the middle of a kidnapping case and the lives of ten children are all depending on her. The only problem is that saving their lives can mean risking her own.

This book was taken from the "Young Adult Reading List" at the Itasca Library. The Third Eye was an interesting and intense story.

The Wizard of Oz at Addison Trail
The audience danced in their seats
By Kyle A.

Most of you have seen The Wizard of Oz, but have you ever seen it over the rainbow? Well, on Friday, February 2, 2001, Addison Trail High School debuted their production of Oz.

It was a long production, but it was worth it. The play started at 7:30 and ended at 10:00. It wasn't shortened, as the plays at Peacock are. This was the movie version.

One enjoyable part of the play was that the characters performed scenes right in the seats among the audience. It was a very active show.

Here at Peacock, our accompaniment music is re-scored and recorded on CD. At Addison Trail, however, the music was performed live by the school orchestra.

During scene changes, the audience was singing and dancing to the orchestras music, especially "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead."

This was one of the greatest plays I have ever seen. The next play at Addison Trail, The Diary of Annie Frank, will be performed April 19-21, 2001.

Mario's does great Italian!
By Jacek M.

Mario's, located at 1700 West Lake Street in Addison, has both eat-in or take out.

When you enter you see display cases of almost every dish they serve. It smells wonderful inside.

Side orders come in small, medium, or large. Their pasta sauce is spectacular. Mario's has a wide variety of salads, from the antipasto to the tuna salad.

Mario's specialty, however, is their beef and ravioli. The ravioli can be served hot or cold, or filled with meat or cheese.

They have specials on weekdays from mostaccioli and meatballs on Monday to manicotti stuffed shells and a piece of eggplant parmesan on Friday.

Mario's menu consists of over twenty different dishes and side-dishes. Catering is also available. They are open from 9:00 A.M to 7:00 P.M Monday through Saturday.

The Outback Steak House
Featuring down under adventure and fine food
By Kyle A.

If you're looking for an Australian adventure, I have the place for you.

On January 17, 2001, my dad and I went to The Outback Steak House, 166 S. Gary Avenue, Bloomingdale.

It is a very cool place. Even though the prices are kind of steep, it's a great place to go.

Now, if you know me, you know I'm not a seafood kind of person. My dad is, however. He ordered Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie for an appetizer, and I almost ate all of it. It was very good.

For a main dish I had Chicken on the Barbie. It was seasoned and grilled chicken breast served with BBQ sauce.

My dad went with a Brisbane Caesar Salad which in his words was "good, but I've had better."

Outback is a great restaurant. This is a great Australian adventure.

What do women want?
Only one man knows
By Sunny B.

What Women Want is a great story, though it does get a little slow. If you like a romance/comedy, then you'll like this movie.

Nick Marshall, played by Mel Gibson, will always be a "ladies man." Born around women, he became rich and famous. As he got older, he became more famous.

One day at work, there is a new employee named Darcy McGuire (Helen Hunt). She is a great worker who becomes very popular around the company.

Through a bizzare accident involving women's beauty products, a hair drier, and a bathtub, Nick gets a new "gift"the ability to hear what women think. That's when the fun really starts.

Overall, I thought the movie was pretty good. The romantic parts were sort of boring, but all of the other parts were really great, and funny.

3LW
By Elisa B.

Yup, you guessed it. There's a hot new girl band, 3LW, for Three Little Women. Three talented young ladies, Naturi, Kiely Ki, and Adrienne make up this new band. Their hit song is "No More."

3LW sing about relationships, crushes, playing, and relationships. They have a single, "I Can't Take It" ("No More" remix) which features the rap artist, Nas.

Four out of twelve songs on their new CD, [name] are slow songs. Several have a rap beat. The rating on the CD is four out of five stars.

Finger Eleven
By Laise Q.

Finger Eleven is not what you think. It is not the middle finger or anything else rude. Finger Eleven is simply an instinct that lives in the back of your brain. It is a decision that you make to be true to yourself, that extra finger that you use to point you in the right direction.

The members of the band include Scott Anderson-vocals, James Black-guitar, Rick Jackett-guitar, Rich Beddoe-drums, and Sean Anderson-bass. Their original band name was Rainbow Monkey Butts, but that name just didn't fit the band.

Finger Eleven got their name from their lead singer, Scott Anderson, singing one of their songs. When the band heard it, they knew that it was going to be their band name.

Finger Eleven is known for their hard rock sound. Some of their sounds are "First Time," "My Carousel," and "Drag You Down." Their hardest song that they have done is "Drag You Down."

If you like bands such as Sevendust, A Perfect Circle or Linkin Park, then I recommend that you listen to Finger Eleven and try out their music.

Grunge
Is it dead yet?
By Paul P.

At the beginning of the 1990's, people were just getting out of the horrible pit of hair bands. Angry white rockers with hair to their waist had songs like "I Wanna Rock" and "Is this Love?"

Then, a band called Nirvana came onto the scene, and rock was never the same. The lead singer, Kurt Cobain drawled out lyrics of self-pity and self-loathing over a heavy bass guitar.

The slow song then exploded into rock at its loudest. The style was then known as "grunge" and was considered by many to be an after-shock of punk.

A wave of other grunge bands came and all put in their distinct sound and feel. In almost no time, grunge was gone and replaced by rap and alternative.

Now it seems like grunge and punk are coming back. The earliest harbingers were Sublime and their imitators, but they died off pretty quickly. Traces of grunge remain, however.

Bands like Limp Bizkit are now using Cobain's style of loud, quiet, loud. Bands such as Incubus are treading on punk/grunge land. All those new bands you hear on Local 101 are pretty much grunge.

I think grunge will just keep coming back like those annoying Gap commercials. And die, and come back, and die, and come back

Eminem is the most controversial singer this century
By Ashley D.

Eminem is a well known hip hop singer whose lyrics are heard all over the United States. Many people love his records and buy his CDs, but there are some who say he is the most horrible singer ever to live.

Controversy surrounds Eminem and the things he says about people. In recent interviews he stated he expresses his anger through his music, but feels he won't be engaging in the behaviors he speaks about in his songs.

However, he has been arrested time and time again for his unacceptable behavior. This includes physically abusing his wife, which he talks about in his songs.

Eminem had a troubled youth. His mom didn't provide much guidance and he never knew his father. He grew up in a ghetto, and was a high school dropout and a drug addict. The only thing that seemed peaceful in his chaotic world was the rap he sang.

Eminem's lyrics are explicit. But many stars such as Marilyn Manson sing on about the same level. Some groups like ICP are even worse. Their records can't even be played on the radio.

Not only will your parents not buy Eminem's CD for you, protestors bang the streets with signs and chants every concert he performs. But he will not change.

Eminem wrote a song called "The way I am," which tries to explain his view. Face facts people, Eminem will never sing lullabies.

Even through all of this controversy, Eminem will still be a big star and his legend will never die.

Valentine's Day Logic
By Michele B., Copy Editor

It's Valentines Day and there are six couples that went to six different restaurants in some order and the girl was given some type of flower. Who did what where and in what order?

· The couples do not have the same first initials and neither did they go to any restaurant starting with that letter.

· Adam did not give his valentine daisies.

· Penelope was treated to dinner right before Sam and right after Diana who wasn't first.

· The boy who gave his valentine lilacs took her to Applebee's.

· Anna, who didn't go to the Crab House, went to dinner right before Kyle and right after the couple who bought the Roses.

· Diana, whose valentine is not John, didn't receive lilacs or daisies.

· A couple went to Dairy Queen right before Cindy and her date went somewhere.

· The girl who received the carnations didn't go to either Dairy Queen or Steak House.

· Craig didn't give his valentine lilacs or marigolds.

· Both Peter and Dave went to dinner before Shannon, who didn't go to dinner last.

· The girl who received the lilies didn't go to Steakhouse or Prairie Rock.

· Katherine did not receive roses.

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2
By Paul P.

A word you should always check before reading a review, is "aggravating." This should be brought up in reviews of such classics as Doom, Dark Forces, or Diablo.

THPS2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, is for the most part not aggravating, but some parts will make you froth at the mouth. Perhaps the developers thought that THPS was too easy. You could easily max out a level's "tapes" in an hour or two.

The latest incarnation of the series has ten requirements. The graphics are very good considering they just covered a bunch of geometric shapes and added a few gaps here and there.

Problems include the odd way wheels are attached to the trucks and how blood is just a spray of red squares.

The best part is being able to customize your skater and create your own skate park. The game play is pretty good. If you go off a quarter pipe, you'll fly twenty-five feet into the air.

Realism problems include being able to jump off the roof of a South Cali school and jump from roof to roof in thirty foot leaps.

The controls are kind of hard because this game was made for a console and was just ported to PC. The sound is GREAT. Bands like Pennywise, Rage against the Machine and Cypress Hill are included on the 15-song soundtrack.

The multiplayer option is good and you can play on a LAN, Local Area Network, for best results. The sound effects are very realistic too. Overall, THPS2 is a good game, but if you have Dreamcast, purchase the console version.

World is not enough
By Michael K.

As I was wandering through Blockbuster, something caught my eye. It was the newest James Bond game, The World is Not Enough. This game is even better than Goldeneye. The missions are, like always, modeled after the movie.

The missions get easier and easier every time you play them. The controls are also very simple and basic.

There is also a multiplayer mode with all updated characters and weapons.

There is one major setback. Unlike Goldeneye, you can't save a game without a controller pack.

Another minor annoyance is that the levels take a while to load. Otherwise, the newest Bond game is a very solid, and is definitely worth checking out.

February Horoscopes
By Christine H.

Hey People! What's up? I'm bored today, so I thought, why not take out my crystal ball? It's been in my attic for a while, so it might be a little dusty

Aquarius- Jan. 21-Feb. 19

Thinking about your birthday? Who to invite? Are you even going to have a party? Or are your friends planning a surprise one? Hopefully it won't end up like last years What to wear? Oops, I almost gave it away Anyway, just let things flow. Everything will be fine

Pisces- Feb.20-Mar.20

Another month, another boyfriend/girlfriend problem. Don't worry though. It'll be over soon. All of your problems will disappear and you might even get a new friend. Maybe a new person will come to the school or you'll see one you never realized was there. Just give them a chance.

Aries- Mar. 21-Apr. 20

You're going to have a good month, possibly even a great year. You'll have new experiences, and don't be scared of them. Just keep an open mind and every thing will be fine. If something really gets freaky don't hide behind a friend or a parent, be your own person. Be brave

Taurus- Apr.21-May 21

Things are going to be interesting for you this month. Report cards are coming out and you're freaked about grades, but don't worry. Everything will be fine, and you don't have to wake up in the middle of the night afraid about school because you did fine with your grades, keep it up!

Gemini-May 22-June 21

You have had a hard time this past month, but don't worry, because my crystal ball says that you have good luck coming your way this month. So stop dreaming about a different place you were at last year, and be happy of where you are right now

Cancer- June 22-July 23

You've been working hard lately. Take a chill pill! You don't need to work so hard. Every thing will be fine. You're school work is great and even your after school actives are fine. Sports like basketball will end soon and that will relieve a lot of stress

Leo-July 24-Aug. 23

Wow! I've never seen such a crowded mind in my entire life. It's amazing that you can think at all. You have way too much to do. You need a break. Take a day off! Maybe on a long weekend you should do something fun. Skip all the meetings and do your homework on a day when you already had plenty of fun. Instead use your Friday to watch a movie or go bowling with your friends.

Virgo- Aug 24-Sept. 23

Now, you have a completely different story then my friend, the Leo. You have way too much time on your hands. Don't run home after school just to watch TV. Instead, join an after school club or a sports team. You might find a new activity that you like that won't fry your brain cells

Libra- Sept. 24-Oct. 23

Hey! Settle down! I know you're having trouble with your family or friends but it's okay. They want to be friends with you just as much as you want to be with them. But think of it this way, they have just as much on their minds as you do. Maybe, just maybe, you should try to talk it out and see what happens.

Scorpio- Oct. 24- Nov. 22

So, I guess you don't know what to do what your life. Right now, you want to be friends with so many people, but some of them won't accept you. Or maybe you have accepted them, but others don't want you to? Well, all you can do is tell the people how you feel and hope they take it well.

Sagittarius-Nov. 23- Dec. 21

Keep your friends close, cause a major guy/girl friend might let you down. That person might break your heart, but don't give up on him/her. She/He might be worth a second chance, and you'll only know if you still really care about them.

Capricorn-Dec.22-Jan. 20

It's finally time for you to unwind. You don't have to worry about sports and the school year is almost half over, but don't let your guard down. There's someone around just waiting for you to slow down. And, all the hectic work might come back next year, so be prepared

Wow! That was fun! I never realized I knew so much about you guys. Well I have to go. My mom says its time for dinner. Yummy! Spaghetti!
