It was a subway series Even though many of my earlier predictions were wrong about the playoffs, one of them wasn't, unfortunately. Our White Sox were swept out of the playoffs by the Seattle Mariners in the first round. What happened? The Sox offense, which was explosive all year, went completely and utterly flat. Their pitching, which had been a weak point during the season, was respectable during the playoffs, but not good enough to compensate for their offensive slump. The Yankees beat the Oakland A's in five games and moved on to beat the Mariners in the ALCS (American League Championship Series) to move to the World Series. In the National League, my pick, the St. Louis Cardinals, beat the defending National League champions, the Atlanta Braves, three games to one. The New York Mets beat the San Franciso Giants in five games, and went on to beat the Cardinals to move to the World Series. This was the first time the Yankees and Mets met in the World Series since 1956. The Yankees started strong by winning the first two games in Yankee Stadium. The Mets responded by winning game three at Shea Stadium. Unfortunately for Mets fans, that was the high point of the series. The Yankees won the next two games at Shea to take the World Series. This was the Yankees third championship in a row. Their dominance in championchip baseball is unquestionable. Email The Charger about this story. How the NFL season looks at midseason We are halfway though the season and the best teams in the AFC are Tennessee Titans and Oakland Raiders with standings of eight and one. The second best is Miami, with a record of seven and two. The best teams in the NFC are the New York Giants, the Minnesota Vikings and the St. Louis Rams with records of seven and two. If you are a Bears fan, you will be mad at this, the Bears standings are two and seven. However, this week's win against the Indianapolis Colts was a relief from the usual misery. For all the Green Bay Packer fans out there they are doing OK, with standings of four and five. Now for an injury report on the Green Bay Packers--although it is only mid- season, the Green Bay Packers have a lot of injures. For example Gary Berry hurt his neck and Earl Dotson hurt his back. There were no injuries for the Bears. What will the rest of the season bring for the Bears and the rest of the NFL? Email The Charger about this story. New girls coach brings experience and method to the job This is Mr. Poremba first year coaching girls basketball. He has, however, been coaching at Peacock since 1991. When he started, Mr. Poremba coached the eighth grade boys. Last year was his first year coaching sixth and seventh grade boys. Mr. Poremba's skill as a coach are appreciated by his players. Sixth grader Lauren Snyder commented that she thought Mr. Poremba was a great coach because he really got into games. Ashley C., a seventh grader on the team said, "Mr. Poremba makes basketball really fun and is the best basketball coach so far." Another seventh grader team member, Natalina C., thought that Mr. Poremba really pushed players to their limits. She added that she liked the way that he printed out the plays so that the players could study them. "It really helps," Natalina explained. According to Mr. Poremba, the hardest part of coaching is picking team members. But you can't have forty people on a team. And he noted that Peacock did have sports such as track and cross country that did not cut team members. Mr. Poremba added that he hoped to see everyone at the first home game on Nov. 6.
