NFL scouting report
Dateline: Sept. 18, 2000
By James M.

Hey, football fans. If you're looking for information about the preseason this is were to look.
Looks like the best teams in the N.F.C. are the Minnesota Vikings, the New York Giants, and the St. Louis Rams. The best team in the A.F.C. appears to be the New York Jets, with all four teams holding a record of three and zero.
Most Peacock students are Bears or Packers fans, but their teams are not playing too well this season. The Packers are in fourth in the N.F.C., and the Bears are in sixth place.
The injury report includes Junior Bryant of the 49er's who landed on his head on artificial turf in the third quarter and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher.
Jay Riemersma, of the Bills, jammed his knee and sprained his ankle. Moses Moreno, of the Chargers left with a shoulder injury while the Chargers lost to Kansas City.
Richard Huntly, of the Steelers has a hamstring injury. Terrell Davis, of the Bronco's has a knee and ankle injury and will be out for at least two weeks.
Terry Fair, of the Lions has a hyperextended left knee, and the Lions lost the game to Tampa Bay because of the injury. Stephen Boyd, also of the Lions has a back injury, and will be out for two weeks.

Baylor still has confidence in the Chicago Cubs
Sammy Sosa hits number 47, 48, 49 and 50
By Jackie S.

Cubs Manager Don Baylor held a meeting with the players because the team was getting angry about losing.
Baylor told his team that he still has confidence in them and they should try to end the season on an up-note.
Cubs pitchers, Kevin Tapani and Rick Aguailera, are out for the rest of the season with injuries.
Kerry Wood is still upset about a suspension and $1,000 fine when he threw a curve ball at a player against the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 27.
One bright spot in the Cubs season is that Coach Baylor got his 500th win in the major league.
Sammy Sosa has hit 50 homeruns in the last three seasons. He continues to be upbeat about this season. The Cubs and Sosa were going to talk about a contract extension on Thursday, September 21. Many Cub fans hope that the Cubs "do the right thing" and sign Sammy to a long-term contract.
The Cubs are in last place in the Central Division with a record of 64 wins and 96 losses.
Baylor has told reporters that he still has a lot of confidence in his team and in their minor league prospects for next year.
Die-hard fans of the Chicago Cubs have also been loyal to their losing team, and are hoping for a better season next year.

Cubs close season
What can we say?
By Jimmy A.

The cubs are falling into a slump that they can't get out of. This season started out poor but as it went on it got a little better.
After the All-Star game, the Cubs had a miraculous time--they swept two series, and took two out of three from another team.
But that's all behind them now. The Cubs lost 37 out 46 of their last games.
Sammy Sosa has done it again in the home run race, but the team has not benefited much from his success.
Sammy Sosa is one of two people to hit fifty home runs in three consecutive years. The other player with that record is St. Louis's home run king, Mark McGwire.

Playoff fever Sox win division
By Michael K.
Dateline October 1, 2000

With October upon us, it's time for the baseball playoffs! The White Sox have clinched the Central Division, ahead of the Cleveland Indians.
Although the Sox have a great offense, their starting pitching is more questionable.
Nevertheless, they are a viable playoff contender, and should be a great team to watch.
In the American League East, the Yankees finally clinched, just ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays
The Yankees fell into a late season slump. The question is whether their winning mystique will carry them into the World Series again.
In the West, it was a close race between the Oakland A's and the Seattle Mariners that went down to the wire.
Oakland won the division, and the Mariners took the wildcard.
Since the A's have a great pitching staff they should do well.
Moving on to the National Leaguethere was no race in the Central Division. The St. Louis Cardinals finished ten games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds.
In the East, the perennial division champions, the Atlanta Braves, finished only one game ahead of the New York Mets, who clinched the wildcard.
Finally, in the West, it was another blow out. The San Francisco Giants finished with the best record in baseball, eleven games ahead of their neighbors, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Giants were very solid this year, and have to be considered a leading playoff contender.

Lake Park football players persist despite pain
By Kelly B.

Why do football players still want to play for the Lake Park Football team in spite of long hot practice sessions and painful injuries?
Senior Tim Corley still likes to play in spite of his injured hand, pulled hamstring, and sore shoulder.
"It's the competition and excitement," said Tim.
Senior Joe Davidson, who hurt his knee, said, "I like to play because it is fun."
Sophomore Scott Tresch, who also injured his knee with a stretched ligament, said that he enjoys football, "because it is physical and there is a lot of hitting."
According to Coach Andy Livingston the football team practices Monday through Thursday and on Saturday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
The games are every Friday night
Coach Livingston and his players described what they do before every game and practice. "It's like a classroom where we work on different skills," said Tim.
"We watch a film of the teams last week game."
"We study them to see how we can take them," said Scott. "I start quiet and think of my responsibilities for the game."
With a record of 2-2 Coach Livingston and players described their team this year. Joe said, "I think they are pretty good."
Scott, however, stated, "We are good, but more teamwork would make us better."
Tim said, "We haven't come together yet, but we have a lot of potential."
"We've made plenty of mistakes." said Coach Livingston, "We've lost to two very good teams. But we are about to turn the corner."

USA swimmers spectacularly successful in Sydney
By Emma H.

At this year's Olympics, the USA won thirty-three medals in the swimming competition, fourteen of those were gold.
Lenny Kryzelberg and Tom Dolan both won gold and broke records. Dolan set a new world record in th men's 400 meter individual medley. His time was 4:11.76, the old record was 4:12.30.
Kryzelberg, who won two gold medals set two new Olympic records in the process, one in the 100 meter backstroke and the other was in the 200 meter backstroke semifinals.
The winning performances were electrifying, but even those swimmers who didn't go home with a medal put on an impressive and inspiring show.

U.S.A. Gymnasts finish proud but medaless
By Skyler M.

The American gymnastics team did not receive a medal, finishing fourth in the team competition. They still put on an impressive performance however, as they came back from mistakes to finish respectably.
The women's team was Jamie Danzter, Kristen Maloney, Elise Ray, Amy Chow, and Dominique Dawes.
They competed in four different events. The first one was vault. In this event, the gymnast must run fast and do a sort of flip, dismount and land.
The dismounts were very difficult. A dismount is a fancy ending before landing which finishes the routine or vault.
After the vault, the gymnasts performed on the uneven bars. The U.S. team generally performed well on the bars, except for one or two mistakes on their landings.
The next event was the balance beam. This is difficult because the gymnasts are jumping and flipping on a skinny balance beam, so it is hard to keep their balance.
The final event was the floor exercise, where each competitor has their own routine that they perform to music.

To be modern or not to be modern!
Female athletes dominate the Olympic stage
By Laura B.

The Olympics began in Greece in 776 BC. To the Greeks, they were a way to honor Zeus, the king of the Greek gods.
The Romans continued the tradition until 390 AD when the games suddenly ended.
In the early 1890's, an educator named Baron Pierre de Coubertin worked to start the Olympics up again. Soon he organized the modern Olympic Games.
Nations would compete instead of just Greek cities and states. The first modern Games took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Only eleven nations attended, this year more than 200 competed.
This year, the Olympics were different from years past. In the past, pole-vaulting was a sport for men only. Stacy Dragila from California believed differently. She took up pole-vaulting.
Dragila won the gold medal in the first ever women's pole-vaulting event. She has also encouraged other women to follow her lead.
Another notable female athlete competing in a new Olympic sport is Cheryl Haworth.
Haworth, who is only seventeen, weighs 300 pounds and won the bronze medal in her weight class. She lifted more than 275 pounds over her head!
Promising sprinter and long jumper Marian Jones hoped to win five gold medals. She ended up with three golds medals, in the 100 meters, the 200 meters, and the 4x400 meter relay. She took a bronze in the long jump and in the 4x100 meter relay.

The cross-country team added two coaches, so there are now three coaches in all. Volunteering to help Ms. Krisik this year are two teachers, Mrs. Jamorran and Mr. Behrendt.
The coaches said that this year's team did an excellent job at the conference meet. They would like to congratulate all the runners for their effort and dedication this season.

Practice produces speed and endurance
By Caitlyn C.

Sixth grader, Kyle P. spends one hour every day running in cross-country. He commits this time because he loves to run. He started running this summer.
Kyle's classmate, Lauren S. has also just started running this year. She too runs for about an hour a day.
Lauren commented that the practices, which included stretching, warm-ups, and jogging, are sometimes difficult.
Eighth grader, James D., also practices one hour a day. He joined cross-country in sixth grade, and loves to run. He thinks cross-country is fun.
James competed in eight meets in both sixth and seventh grade. A typical practice for James includes a warm up lap and then some words from the coach.
