Several individual school records broken at final meet By Emily W.
Eighty-five students, a little more than a quarter of all Peacock's students, competed against six other schools: Medinah, Churchville, Westfield, Springwood, Roselle, and Wood Dale. The Peacock girls' team placed third overall, and the boys placed fourth. There are many events in track. The three main categories are the relays, field events, and running events. The relay and running events can be as short as 50 meters or as long as a mile. Several team members beat school records. Seventh grader Colleen M. set a new record for the mile at 5:57. Eighth grader Kelsey Blanchard beat the girls' 200 meter dash record, and seventh grader David K. beat the boys' 200 record. Sixth grader Julia Nelson commented, "I really enjoy running the 800 meters; it's not too long but not so short that you have to sprint the whole time." Julia ran the 400-meter relay, where each member of the four person teams runs 400 meters. "I was really nervous," admitted Julia. Her team completed the relay in 5:18, finishing seventh. Peacock's track team also participated in field events, such as the high jump, triple jump, long jump, and shot put. Star performers in the field included eighth grader Nick T., who beat Peacock's old high jump record with a jump of 5 feet, 3 inches, and eighth grader Dana D., who beat the shot put record. Seventh grader Nicole D. participated in her favorite events, the triple jump and the long jump. Nicole commented that she enjoyed the pressure of the competition. "It was cool jumping against all six of the different schools," she added.
Nicole participates in basketball, softball, and volleyball. Julia Nelson plays lots of soccer. But the girls agreed that daily track practice provided the best conditioning. Though Nicole likes to jump, she really doesn't like to run all that much. But all track members do long-distance jogs in practice to raise their endurance. They also participate in practice meets before the conference meet. The track members said that the coaches really helped their conditioning. Julia commented, "I like the coaches a lot, especially because they push us." Peacock's track coaches are Ms. Krisik, Mr. Anderson, and Ms. Jomarron. Ms. Krisik participated in track herself when she was in high school. She said that her best events were the 400-meter dash and the long jump. She and the other coaches were very pleased with this year's team and their final record. "We went against some bigger schools, and not as many kids go out for the team here as they do at other schools," said Ms. Krisik. Julia thought the team worked very well together and had a great season. Nicole added, "There was a lot of competition this year, so all things considered, we did really well."
