Area:One Music Festival
Moby rocked

By Paul P.

On July 25, The Area:One Music Festival, sponsored by Intel, KMX, and Pepsi, came to Chicago. A:O took up the Tweeter Center (formerly the World Music Theater) and lots of its parking lot.

The headlining acts appeared on the main stage, while smaller bands and DJs rocked at small air-conditioned tents.

The main acts were Nelly Furtado, The Roots, Incubus, OutKast, and the festival's organizer, Moby.

The dance tent housed such acts as the great-but-undiscovered French band, Rin̫̤̩r̫se, and famous DJs like Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, ORB, and Kevin Saunderson.

Booths for Intel products and KMX Energy Drink abounded in the surrounding lot, as well as a roving Mtv2 camera crew.

Nelly Furtado was first up with her funky new brand of power pop. Sadly, she performed to only a few hundred of the 20,000 music fans attending.

Forty minutes later, the Hip-hop/rock band (yes band) The Roots performed, ending with the crowd-pleasing show of Scratch the human turntable and another appearance of Nelly Furtado. The drummer threw his XXL afro clips into the audience and The Roots left. There were 10,000 people in the crowd now.

Incubus came on and rocked about 15,000 fans, while the rest were in the tent listening to ORB weave a rockin' remix of the classic Monty Python theme song.

OutKast performed to a full house of screaming fans. Security guards were called in to get people off of chairs and make sure there was no rioting.

OutKast exited stage and everyone piled into the DJ tent for the world-renowned DJ, Paul Oakenfold's blend of extreme bass and funky treble lines.

Moby rocketed on to the main stage with the fast-paced favorite, Machete. The 5'2 tour organizer stepped on stage to a roaring audience as he said quietly and politely, "I hope everyone is having a nice time." Moby blew the roof off and left everyone in a daze.

The Area:One Music Festival has turned out to be a success even though it blends lots of different music styles together.

Sanibel Island

By Jackie S.

The palm trees swayed

On that wonderful day

Where the stingrays played

And the dolphins danced away

Sharks hunted far out to sea

This was a lovely place to be

The sand was very hot

The waves did not stop

Seashells were everywhere

Sailboats were here and there

The sun was shining so brightly

The sea life was pictured so beautifully

On this beach and isle in Florida called

Sanibel Island

Red Faction is brilliant

By Paul P.

Red Faction has been long awaited by both console and PC fans alike. The Playstation2 version was released several months ago and PC version is still in the works. This is a review of the Playstation2 version.

Red Faction is set on Mars, where the Ultor Corporation has set up mines everywhere. Miners are recruited with promises of adventure and high pay, but are instead cheated and lied to until they practically become slaves to Ultor.

You are cast as John Parker, a miner who, at the signal from Red Faction leader, Eos, strikes back at Ultor to win back Mars.

Red Faction is the first game to use the new Geo-Mod technology, which enables you to destroy almost anything in your environment. Walls can be knocked down, bridges can be collapsed, windows can be shattered, and any other things you can think of.

The graphics are first rate and the lighting and shadows give the environments a realistic feel.

The game spreads over many environments and lots of plot twists. You explore mines, guard stations, lobbies, canyons, mutant zoos, laboratories, space stations, and an undersea office building.

You can also drive many vehicles including a submarine and a spaceship.

The controls are a little tough to get a grip of at first, but after you play for a few hours, they become fluid and easy. The weapon selection is very wide ranging from the mundane (12mm pistol) to the exotic (rail driver).

The weapons are very balanced with the exception of the rail driver. This is a firearm that fires a straight bolt of laser and has an infrared scope that lets you fire through walls from across the map. Once the AI gets a hold of this, you'll find yourself dying every five minutes until you see what weapon the enemy is holding.

The sound is great too. The music pumps you up for battles and the sound effects make you feel like you're in the game.

Multiplayer is another part where Red Faction shines. The level design is brilliant and weapons are in good places. Most maps have at least two secret rooms that become accessible by blasting out a wall or floor.

After playing for approximately twelve to sixteen hours a day, I beat the game in about four days.

Red Faction is an overall great buy. If you love action games, this is a must.

Dethroned and soon to be beheaded: the PIII

By Ryan B.

Summer vacation is over. But all good things must come to an end, like the run of the Pentium III. It may very well be only a year before the PIII is no longer sold on desktop computers, and only a couple years after that when this chip will stop production forever.

Making room for the more capable (or less, depending on how you look at it) Pentium 4 and the latest Thunderbird processors from AMD, the PIII will slowly be phased out of desktops, starting some time next year.

Eventually, the original PIII will die, but its "soul" will live on in the new Pentium III Mobile. The PIII M is the latest generation of mobile processors, running up to 1.13 Ghz.

The PIII M is now available in notebooks from most, if not all PC computer companies. The only difference between this new chip and the original PIII is that the PIII M uses slightly less energy and runs 30 Mhz faster (which is not all that much).

So, if you are looking for a great powerhouse PC but are on a budget, the PIII won't last much longer, so act now.

Ruby Tuesdays was fun and friendly

By Caitlyn C.

I went to RUBY TUESDAYS for lunch on August 17, 2001 with my aunt, my sister and her fianc̩. It was at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg.

I ordered a potato and onion straws. The service was very good. The pricing was fairly cheap. Every one there was very friendly.

It wasn't that busy, probably because we went at a good time.

I know I will definitely go there again. I also hope you go there and have fun and like the food as much as I did.

Scale of 1-5

Food: 5

Atmosphere: 3

Service: 4

Cleanliness: 5
