Girls track team places third at conference
By Emily W.

Seventh grader, Nicole M., competes in the triple-jump during the conference meet at Lake Park West on May 12, 2003.
The track team had a hard working season but not the best conference results. The DuPage Valley Conference Meet was held on May 12, 2003.

Peacock's girls came in third place out of seven teams. The boys came in a disappointing sixth place.
"The track season was successful in training and performances. The kids worked hard and showed signs of improvement," said Mr. Anderson, the head coach.

Mr. Larson and Mrs. Jomarron also coached the team.

All the runners really enjoyed the coaching staff this season.

"They were really encouraging and without these great coaches, our team would have fallen apart," said seventh grader Pamela R.

Starting right after Spring Break, the team practiced sixty to ninety minutes a day.

At the beginning of the season, the team practiced together and had time trials for the running events.

"After we figured out our events, we had our own individual workouts," explained Pam.

There are three main categories of events for track: the running events, the jumping events, and the team relay events.

Seventh grader Randy P.'s best event is the triple jump. "I like doing triple, its fun and I jump pretty good" he explained.

There were two practice meets before the Conference this season. Peacock hosted both of them.

"My best meet was the first meet we had, because I placed second in my heat for the 200 and my relay team got first in our heat for the 200x4 relay," said Pam.

"The track team didn't do the best at Conference, but they tried their hardest and that's all that matters," commented Mr. Anderson.

Heart of hockey
Nick D. plays from the heart
By Jackie S., Entertainment Editor

Eighth grader, Nick D., plays with the Franklin Park Panthers at the United Center.
Peacock eighth grader Nick D. recently finished a hockey season at Franklin Park. He was on the Franklin Park Panther Bantam 3 team.

A few weeks ago he was told he had made the Lake Park Lancers Junior Varsity hockey team. Nick is very happy he made the team. Nick said, "I need a lot of practice to get used to the differences."

Nick started playing hockey four years ago. He got inspired to play hockey in 1998. "I went to a hockey game and liked it so much I decided to play," Nick laughed. He chose to be goalie because he thought it was the easiest position.

When he was with the Panthers, Nick was in four tournaments. In the Christmas Tournament at Franklin Park and the Spring Tournament in Holland, Michigan they placed second.

Nick has won two trophies with the Panthers.

Practices at Franklin Park are two days a week for an hour. At the practices, Nick and the other Panthers skate laps, practice stick handling around cones, checking, and face-offs. They also scrimmage sometimes.
Nick liked to going to Holland, Michigan. Nick said, "I got a chance to hang-out with my teammates more and we had fun and played hockey."

This was Nick's first time out of state. The other fun part for him was that he got to stay up as late as he wanted.

Nick also got to play at the United Center. They won at the United Center too. Nick said, "It was a lot of fun to play on, but it's a lot smaller than it seems."

When Nick was playing with the Panthers he got along with his teammates well. He said, "The captain, Tim Lightiser, was good most of the time, but you don't want to get under his skin."

He liked Josh Misewicz and Chris Gordon, the assitant captains as well. One of Nick's teammates, Steve Zachar, said, "Nick would do this crazy roll across the net to save a puck, almost like a Martin Brodeur or Patrick Roy. Nick was a good goalie too."

Nick plays hockey everyday whether it's on the ice or outside. "I like to play hockey just for the fun of it!"
