City's strength and beauty shine through
By Susie S.

This summer I went with my family on the most unexpected vacation. We talked about it, but we never really thought we would go.

That was, until about the end of July when my uncle finally said we were going for sure, and a few weeks later we were off to New York City.

After we got to our hotel, we went to Times Square and spent the whole day there. There was a flea market nearby, and we had a lot of fun.

To see Lady Liberty in pictures and books is impressive, but to see her with your own eyes is beyond words.
I woke up at seven one morning, and joined my family on a double-decker tour bus.

I saw the most amazing things on the tour. Our first stop was the Empire State building. It was so magnificent.

Then we saw Battery Park, where we got off the bus, and took a ferry to Ellis and Liberty Island.

Ellis Island was where many American immigrants first landed.

When the ferry was taking us to Liberty Island, I saw the most amazing thing in almost all of New York, The Statue of Liberty.

When we left Liberty Island, we went to see Ground Zero. Although most of it was cleaned up it felt so empty.

There were even people there who witnessed the 9/11 attacks and who described them in their own words.

Before I got to Ground Zero, I thought it would be big, but sort of small too. I was so wrong. It was huge, it was a huge hole in the ground, and nothing was left of the Twin Towers.

When we left Ground Zero, we saw all the pictures that people had left in memory of their family and friends who had died on September 11.

It made some members of my family cry, but even those who didn't cry felt the pain of those people who had lost their loved ones.

We woke up early one day, in hopes that we would appear on the Today Show. We waited, and it seemed like forever, but we got on T.V.

It was so much fun to see Katie Couric, Al Roker, and Lester Holt, who was filling in for Matt Lauer.

After we got on T.V., we went on a long walk through Central Park.

Then we finally got to Madame Taussauds Wax Museum. It was so cool because they had wax figures of so many celebrities.

I saw wax figures of Harrison Ford, Brad Pitt, Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles, President Bush, President Lincoln and Princess Diana.

On our last day in NYC, my family and I went shopping on the famous 5th Avenue. It was so great.

That night we saw the new popular musical The Producers. Which, of course, being a Mel Brooks production, was utterly hilarious.

We returned home, and the last thing I saw was the Statue of Liberty standing strong. And now I believe that although the attacks on September 11, 2001 broke many hearts, the spirits of all Americans are still strong.

It's Time
By Joanna M.

It's time to relax,
It's time to have fun.
It's time to play
and have all your homework done.

It's time for long nights,
It's time to sleep late.
It's time to dream of a deep, blue lake.
It's time for summer

That's all I can say.
Hope you had a great one
because school is on its way.
